The Distinctive Look of Ohio Buckeye Trees
Ohio Buckeye trees stand out with their rounded crowns and dense canopies of leaves. Each leaf has five dark green leaflets arranged in a fan shape, like fingers spreading from a palm. In the fall, these leaves turn orange and red and are often one of the first trees to show fall color.
The flowers appear in early spring in upright clusters of small yellow-green blooms 4-7 inches tall. These showy pyramidal clusters emerge with the leaves. The bark becomes grayish-brown with age and develops scales and deep furrows for texture.
Most recognizable are the fruits – glossy brown nuts enclosed in thick, warty husks. These nuts are the tree’s common name givers. They are mahogany colored with a lighter circular patch that looks like a deer’s eye. Beautiful but toxic to humans and livestock, they’re better for decoration than eating.
